S197 vs S550 vs S650: Which Coyote Mustang GT Should You Buy?

Every Mustang GT since 2011 has carried the Coyote 5.0 V8 — but a 2012 GT and a 2024 GT are very different cars. If you are shopping for a Coyote Mustang, here is how the S197, S550 and S650 generations stack up, and which one makes sense for your budget and plans.

S197 Mustang GT (2011–2014): the value Coyote

The 2011–2014 S197 introduced the Gen 1 Coyote, rated at 412 hp (2011–2012) and 420 hp (2013–2014). It is the cheapest way into Coyote ownership, with a massive aftermarket and a simple, analog feel. The trade-offs: a solid rear axle, older interior and less refined chassis. For a budget build or a dedicated drag car, it is hard to beat.

  • Gen 1 Coyote, port injection, strong forged crank.
  • Solid rear axle — great for drag launches, less so on bumpy roads.
  • Boss 302 (2012–2013) is the collector pick of the generation.

S550 Mustang GT (2015–2023): the sweet spot

The S550 brought independent rear suspension and a big step up in refinement. 2015–2017 cars have the Gen 2 Coyote (435 hp); 2018–2023 cars get the Gen 3 with direct injection, a 7,500 rpm redline and 460 hp, plus the available 10R80 10-speed automatic. For most buyers, a 2018+ GT is the best blend of price, performance and tuning potential.

  • Gen 2 (2015–2017) and Gen 3 (2018–2023) Coyotes.
  • Independent rear suspension and much better road manners.
  • Gen 3 plus 10-speed respond extremely well to a tune.

S650 Mustang GT (2024+): newest tech

The S650 carries the Gen 4 Coyote with dual throttle bodies, rated around 480 hp in the GT and 500 hp in the Dark Horse. You get a digital cockpit, updated chassis and the latest safety tech. It is the most expensive option and the tuning scene is still maturing, but it is the most capable Coyote Mustang yet, and the manual transmission is still available.
